R M Salunkhe
Rural Energy Expert / Social Worker
Mr. Rajendra Salunkhe, a very curious and science minded person was born and brought up in Chaphal village in Satara district in the state of Maharashtra. Right from his childhood he sensed the hardship, struggle and the problems that are affecting the health of people in rural areas. This inspired him to work in the field of renewable energy and waste management to develop technologies for the betterment of the life in rural areas. For past 35 years he has been working towards developing and implementation of technologies for waste management, reducing pollution, providing alternatives to conventional energy sources. Currently he is performing R&D work to convert waste material into useful energy so as to reduce need for waste treatment and management. His main researches include various types of Biomass based Improved Cookstoves, Bio Charcoal, Zero garbage concept, Biogas technology, Agriculture based technologies and Modern villages.
In doing work in the field of non-conventional energy he was associated with research organizations like NGO’s funded by government namely Research centre Castford & Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI). While working in these NGO’s, he worked with scientists namely Dr. B.D Tilak, Dr. A.D. Karve, R.D. Deshmukh. During his association with NGO ARTI - Appropriate Rural Technology Institute he worked along with Dr. A.D Karve in researching and developing various technologies, some of which received global level Ashden award. Some of these technologies are Biomass charcoal, Sarai cooker & Compact Biogas system.
While working with these NGOs and companies he has implemented these technologies in govt. agencies, NGOs, well reputed organizations & institutes like MEDA Maharashtra, ZP in Maharashtra, KVIC, DRDO, RDA Goa, JEDA, Aarohi Uttarkhand, WTI, WWF, MNERE under TBU all over India, LAYA, IRKON, Private sectors & Educational institutes in India, Singapore.
Presently he is working as Technical director with Surya Shashwat Urja Ani Krushi Tantragyan, Aurangabad/Pune. Alsohe is Founder member of Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI), Pune. Main motive being transfer of these technologies to villages at minimal cost and developing entrepreneurs of these technologies by arranging various training programs. Also, as a social worker he is working with various NGO’s which adopt villages for their development and implementation these technologies.
His vision is to make rural areas self-employable and self-sustainable through implementation of these technologies and developing entrepreneurs
Biogas is a renewable energy source. It is produced by fermenting animal dung, plant and food waste. Traditional biogas systems in India were dung based and these gobar gas plants have been in operation for a long period of time. Biogas system is not only useful in producing gas but the slurry given out by the system is high quality manure. It is useful in improving the agricultural yield.
Hirai Biogas system is a hybrid system as it is a combination of fixed dome and floating dome biogas system with attached pre-digester. The entire working of the system is anaerobic in nature with increased digestive capacity. This reduces the time required for producing gas.
Feed stock for the system is animal dung, plant and food waste. The working temperature of the digestive system of Hirai biogas plant remains constant irrespective of weather conditions.
Improved Cookstoves are designed to
reduce fuel consumption per meal and to curb smoke emissions from open fires inside dwellings. They are designed for developing country settings as a low cost bridging technology.
Sarai cooker is a Ashden award winning invention at international level. Sarai cooker is used to cook the food at low pressure on bio charcoal which maintains the nutrients of the food and improves the quality of taste. This also help our time as it doesn't need any attention like pressurized cooker to stop cooking after specific time so that food should not get overcooked.
The Incinerator cum Hot Water System burns with controlled method as standardized by BIS standards and called as clean burning. This system is implemented to burn all types of dry waste such as dry paper pieces, food wrappers, dry garden waste, diapers, sanitary napkins, shoes, waste cloths, waste torn school bags, wood, etc. Also can be used to produces good quality hot water of temperature about 60 degree.
Solar dryer is a system which is used to naturally dry the food stuffs like fruits, vegetables etc. on Solar energy.
Biochar is charcoal that is produced by pyrolysis of biomass in the absence of oxygen.
